Kendal Town v Cammell Laird

Preview by Richard Edmondson

Kendal on the back of a good solid 2-1 win at the weekend will be looking for much of the same when they entertain newly promoted Cammell Laird in this midweek Unibond Premier Division fixture. So far so good for Kendal at this early stage of the season, there have been a few inconsistencies, but with a settled team and a lot of the players at the top of their game it’s really just a case of keeping the points ticking over at this moment in time. Tuesday nights match is extra special for Carl Osman as he used to play for Cammell Laird; he had a good spell down there and will be looking to make an impression more than most. A positive result for Kendal would also edge us very close to the play off positions, and all be it the season is still in its early stages, its better too be near the top end rather than fighting it out at the bottom. The Opposition: Last season Cammell Laird were promoted automatically from 2nd place to The Unibond Premier Division as Retford United’s ground didn’t meet the grading required. So far they have played 6 games only winning once. They currently sit in 21st place on 4 points, only scoring 3 goals and having conceded 9. They had the weekend off as their home match with Worksop Town fell foul to the weather. In truth I don’t really know a lot about them but their main player seems to be Neil Black who’s scored all of their 3 goals so far this season. Looking at various match reports, they seem to have had a mixed bag of performances, against Ashton a few weeks ago they dominated the game for large periods and even went in front only to end up losing at the death. Their main weakness seems to be the strike power up front and their 2 centre halves at the back in Graham Branch and Dave Challinor. Both of those are in their latter stages of their careers and even though their experience is valuable to them they lack pace and seemingly struggle against side’s with pace. That said if you want leadership and cool heads those are the men to rely on. So overall a very winnable game for Kendal considering the oppositions early season struggles. That said Town must be professional and on top of their game as always to get a good result.
