Kendal Town continued their great start to the season with a second win at high flying Ashton United within nine days. This was a solid performance against a side that were sat in third position in the table. There were several tactical changes in Town's starting eleven, Jimmy Williams on the right of midfield and Carl Osman on the left, with Paul Byrne and Callum Warburton in the centre of midfield. The game opened at a frantic pace, with Town playing a high tempo passing game. Lee Ashcroft had Town's first chance as he broke free of the Ashton defence, only to slip as he was about to get ashot off. Ashton responded with an effort from Liam Ralph that was deflected just wide. Ashton's Stephen Rose then shot over from distance. A great Carl Osman cross just evaded Craig Hobson. Ashton's Ben Smith fired over from close range. A poor challenge on Carl Osman led to a free kick, this was whipped into the area and the home side just about scrambled it clear. There was more than half a shout for a penalty as Ashcroft was brought down in the area, the referee declined it. A great run and crosss from Ashcroft was met at the near post by Jimmy Williams, but the Ashton 'keeper Terry Smith saved well. So 0-0 at half time. The second had started fairly evenly but a remarkable decision by the referee on 54 minutes changed the direction of the game. Dan Wordsworth was clearly pushed in the back, as he lost his balance, the ball struck his arm. With the Kendal lads expecting a free kick to them, the referee amazingly awarded a penalty to the home side !! Iain Howard stepped up to score from the spot. This brought about a double sustitution for Town, Tony Hallm and Anthony Murt replacing Lee Ashcroft and Jimmy Williams. It sparked a surge of attacks from Kendal Town. Callum Warburton shot over the bar. Murt headed just wide, but a minute later a Neil Murphy cross was headed home by Craig Hobson on 65 minutes. Would Town shut up shop and settle for a point ??, not a bit of it. A Tony Hallam effort was tipped onto the bar. A great run and shot from Osman was blocked. On 79 minutes Town took a deserved lead as Osman headed the ball into Hobson's path and the big forward somehow squeezed it past the 'keeper at the near post. Murt then had a shot saved. David Newnes saved well from an Ashton header from a corner. Hobson nearly grabbed his second hat-trick of the season, but the 'keeper just got to the ball ahead of him. In the last few minutes, Warburton won every ball in the middle of the field, he'd already covered every blade of grass on the pitch. So as the full time whistle was greeted by a loud cheer from the many traveling Town fans, the players were ecstatic having moved up to 4th place in the table.
